To Bloomington and Back Again!

Often a tour stop for the Dalai Lama, Bloomington, Indiana is the next stop for the strange brew of the Climbers That Care folks. Matt and Amy Tackett will be rolling up to Hoosier Heights this Friday, December 11th, and hope to thrill you all with a beautiful slideshow that pulls together several of the Red's best photographers and a couple of its damn good musicians as well. Make sure to bring a few donations (non-perishables or clothes) to get that free admission.

And after making the journey northward (and slightly west), they'll pilgrim their way back to Eastern Kentucky University to bring their smiling faces to the climbing gym there. Avoid the cold and help us round out the holiday season tour in high fashion - bring a record amount of donations to show how much we love the area and can share the people that make it the Red. Plus, bringing that bag of donations is going to get you in the door for free. All in all, not bad for a snowy Saturday in Kentucky.

Thanksgiving Tour

Help us make this year's Climbers That Care event even better by bringing in canned goods, hats, jackets, presents.. whatever fits your fancy

Another season coming to an end in the Red, at least thats what we tell all the people from other parts of the country. Time to decide whether to fatten up at the family Thanksgiving feast or eat tuna from a can with friends in the dirty South. It's the perfect time to start planning the deep Winter trip and finally hit Hueco. Or maybe its time to hit the plastic and get freaky strong for next Springs routes. Or maybe its time to drop climbing for the season and hit the powder...

When you list it out like that most of our lifes choices seem pretty tame compared to a lot of those in the local areas around the Red. Instead of choosing how to waste their day away wrestling rocks or skiing slopes, they are trying to figure out how to put a hot meal on the table and clothes on their children backs.

This is your chance to give back to the families of the areas that you play in. Please bring your canned goods, hats, jackets, boots or whatever could make someones winter a little more comfortable. Last year we had a full truckload of supplies donated and hope to repeat that this year. All the food and clothing is donated to the food bank ran by the Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd in Campton. If cash is your only option be assured that 100% will be used to buy food/clothing for the drive.

This year we are going on a gym tour and plan to hit as many gyms as possible. Right now we have Eastern Kentucky University and Bluegrass Bouldering committed. If you have a gym or would like to suggest one to host please get in touch with us.

Festivities will include free admittance to the gym, a one of a kind slide show featuring many of the areas talented photographers, including some old school favorites, music at some of the events as well as pot luck dinners (depending on location we will have adult refreshments available). And of course, there will be plenty of good folks and warm smiles to go around.

We are in the early parts of planning so please stay tuned for more details specific to each event.

Many thanks,

Back to School in Powell County, Kentucky

Calvin and Hobbes think you have some old pens and notebooks you don't need anymore..Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Remember the days when summer was coming to an end ? No more staying up late, no more long days at the lake, having to start listening to teachers and praying for the next summer to start.. Dealing with not having the supplies to be productive at school should not be a problem.

With our country's current economic problems and the on going problems of this region most the children around this part of the country will start off each year behind and lacking the supplies they need to ensure a better life.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Climbers That Care will be gathering school supplies and will be distributing them to the local schools.

Drop your supplies off at RRO's paintball office anytime or better yet bring them to the Johnny and Alex Trail Day on August 1st !
Thanks and if you have any questions please let me know,

Matt

climbers that care 2008

hey all,

so, if you've been living under a rock for the past year, the economy's been struggling a bit. and with the holidays coming up, people on the edge are going to need a hand more than ever (any question about poverty in the area? eastern kentucky is one of the poorest areas in the country, see the images below). in the past, we've had "climbers that care" events before thanksgiving..

this year, though, we're going to be having an event at torrent falls cabins on the weekend of december 13 and 14. saturday we'll have a pot luck and some music, maybe a slideshow and a movie or two.. just a chance for people to contribute and hang out and help out the local community. and if you bring something for the donations, you'll be invited to stay and climb for the day as well. (if you have some ideas, please share them in the comments section)

we're not going for much of anything too formal right now. just an easy evening helping folks out and hanging out with people.. bring a guitar, drums, whatever.. we've really done well in the past.. hopefully we can do the same again this year. if you can't make it but still have donations, you can drop them off at red river outdoors at the paintball building on weekends or you can contact them.

and in case there's any confusing: this is not a red river outdoors or red river gorge climbers coalition event. this is just some people getting together to do some good. (more details will follow.. but for now, just be sure to mark it on your calendars)
